Motorway Driving Lessonsin London
Auto-Drive Driving School gives motorway driving lessons from Camden, North and Central London, helping new and returning drivers handle high-speed roads safely and calmly.
About our motorway driving lessons
Motorway driving can feel daunting. Our motorway lessons cover lane discipline, merging, safe overtaking, and dealing with high-speed traffic with confidence.
Ideal for: Newly passed drivers who want to tackle motorway driving safely and confidently.
Most London driving happens at low speeds, so the first trip onto a motorway can be a shock: faster traffic, longer distances to plan ahead, smart motorway signs and lanes that change use. A motorway lesson lets you meet all of that for the first time with an experienced instructor beside you and dual controls in the car.
Since June 2018, learner drivers in England, Scotland and Wales have been allowed to take motorway lessons with an approved driving instructor in a car with dual controls, so motorway lessons are open to learners who are nearly test ready as well as to newly qualified drivers.
A motorway lesson is also a chance to practise the skills that keep you safe on any fast road: looking well ahead, keeping a two-second gap (more in the wet), checking mirrors and blind spots before every lane change, and staying calm when traffic slows suddenly. We go at your pace, and we only join the motorway once you are comfortable on the faster roads leading to it.
What’s included
Every lesson is one to one, in the car you will learn and can take your test in.
- Joining a motorway from a slip road and matching speed
- Lane discipline and keeping a safe gap
- Safe overtaking and returning to the left lane
- Reading overhead signs and smart motorway signals
- Leaving a motorway and dealing with junctions
- What to do if you break down
- A dual-control automatic car and a Grade A DVSA-approved instructor
What to plan before you book
-
Be confident on fast roads first
You should be comfortable on dual carriageways and busy A roads before a motorway lesson, so the higher speeds are the only new thing.
-
Allow time
From central London a motorway is some distance away, so a motorway lesson is usually longer than a standard lesson. Ask us how long to book.
-
Know the signs
Read the Highway Code sections on motorways and smart motorways, including red X signals and emergency areas.

Good to know
-
Learners can take motorway lessons
A learner may drive on a motorway only with an approved driving instructor in a dual-control car. Practice with friends or family on motorways is not allowed until you have passed.
-
Not on the test
Motorways are not part of the practical driving test, so many drivers have never used one when they pass.
-
Pass Plus includes motorways
If you want more after-test experience, Pass Plus covers motorways along with town, rural, night and all-weather driving.
-
Breakdowns
If you break down, the advice is to get off the motorway if you can, or into an emergency area or hard shoulder, and wait behind the barrier.
Motorway Driving Lessons: your questions answered
Still have a question?
Call us for a quick chat. We'll guide you every step of the way.
Can I take motorway lessons as a learner?
Yes. Since June 2018, learners can drive on a motorway with an approved driving instructor in a car with dual controls.
Is motorway driving part of the driving test?
No. Motorways are not part of the practical test, which is why many new drivers want lessons on them after passing.
How long is a motorway lesson?
Because motorways are some distance from central London, a motorway lesson is usually longer than a standard lesson. We will agree the length with you when you book.
Is there a motorway near Camden?
The nearest motorways are outside central London, so part of the lesson is spent getting there on fast A roads, which is useful practice too.
How much is a motorway lesson?
Lessons are £40/hr, so the cost depends on how long the lesson is.
